Hi Lads,

I didn't know until today where to spend my summer holidays. I just booked 2
tickets for Greece (I am taking my girlfriend with me). Never been there but
heard a lot about it. Which are the islands that you recommend me to visit
(and for how long should I stay) and should I book any hotels or spend
nights in some kind of B&Bs once I reach the islands? We have only booked 1
night in Athens just to visit the acropolis and some other touristy spots, a
part from that nothing.

Thanks in advance and regards,

Aran

To answer that question I think the group needs more information about what
you are looking for! Sandy beaches? Party-places? Culture? Busy og quiet?
How long will you be in Greece?

Personally I have spent 30 weeks in Chios for the last 17 years and still I
have not covered the island, so my advice to you without knowing what you
are looking for; Don't bite over too much/too many islands! I have read
islandhoppers recommend 3-4 islands during a two weeks period depending on
which islands you choose to visit. It has something to do with distances as
well as with how often the boats/flights are traficing the island how many
you can cover without spending all your time travelling.

Thanks a million for your reply. We have 14 days, form the 19th till the 1st
of sept.

What we are looking for is a mixture of everything, relax, sandy wild
beaches, good genuine seafood, straight contact with the locals, bars Some
friends of mine told me to spend 2 days in Santorini and then form there
travel to Mykons making stops in Naxos and Paros, I have also read that
Felogandros is actually one of the best islands. To be honest I don't, what
do you think I should go as first visit to Greece??

About Santorini and Folegandros: last year we arrived at Santorini island
and stayed for 5 days.
Don't forget to visit IA, the donkey trail to the old harbour and I advice
to make
the day boat trip to vulcano island too.

Then we took the ferry to Folegandros (7 euro) and stayed 5 days in the
Vardia Bay studios
right in front of the harbour (very nice!). Just sit on your terras and
watch the arriving and
departing ferries and fishermen.
Beach behind the studio and even the water in the harbour is crystal clear.
You can catch a bus to the village (there is only 1), takes 20 mins.

After Folegandros we visted Milos (2 hrs by ferry, costs about 19 euro) for
1 week. A bit crowded, but
mainly by the Greek. Nice multi colered different beaches: pure white,
black, red,
green. You'll need a car overthere. But you won't drive many km's.
From Milos we went back to Santorini, 3.5 hrs and 34 euro.

It was high season, but we just stayed in appartments that are offered on
arrival.
On Milos we stayed in

Folegandros:

For Santorini I suggest you to make a reservation.
Perhaps this is nice: http://www.familyhotelhellas.com/ quiet appartements,
nice swimming pool
and only 5 minutes walk to the crowded village of Thira.
When you arrive by plane, the owner will pick you up (20 euro) while he's a
taxi driver too.

Good luck,

Sorry, I was a bit tired yesterday and didn't notice your 14 days in the
subject-line.

I went to Chios, fell in love with the island and never got to see another
island in Greece(been to Halkidiki though), so I am not the right person to
ask ;-)

Unless you consider going to Chios, which is a somewhat different to
"postcard Greece" with it's very low number of tourists(except for Greeks in
the high season July/August),it's Genoveese mansions, houses in
Thymiana-stone, varied nature from plains to mountains and cliffs, no
party-party unless you look up the places where the locals party, secluded
beaches as well as beaches with umbrellas and sunbeds, plenty of sights,
great food, friendly and helpful locals, busy main town with plenty of
shopping and a "bar-strip" at the harbour... :-D

As for Milos that Gurt tells you about, I have seen a video from the trip
made by Greek friends and the colours seems fantastic! She really
recommended a visit there.

Your friends suggestion sounds ok to me. Santorini sounds like it's worth a
visit, and alot of people say a few days, and then travel on and I have only
heard nice about the other islands you are looking at. Busy islands in the
tourist season(maybe apart from Folegandros?) but nice.
