We've managed the gas bill, the Council Tax, a joint bank account and a
couple of clubs I was already a member of.

We live in Scarborough, there's no-one in the teeny tiny Jobcentre here who
does it, someone has to come from York.

We ring up...

"You can't have one unless you get a job."

"I'm self employed"

"Oh dear, there doesn't seem to be a mechanism until after you've worked
for a period, but, we can get you one if you have rejection letters,
sometimes"

"But I can't open an ISA without one"

"We cannot issue an NI number for banking purposes"

Application for jobs followed and we collected the appropriate number of
rejection letters...

The appointment then takes about a week to get.

First interview...

We start and get to page five or six...

The lady takes a phone call, goes white and runs away, the supervisor
comes out and apologises and says 'Please make a new appointment.

We then had to go to India for a month for personal reasons(Bombay in the
monsoon is not an experience I'd recommend)

We return and try to make a new appointment...

But this is the school holidays and Jobcentres are full of school leavers
getting new NI numbers...

A month later one turns up...

We go along and get the forms filled in.

The letter comes about four weeks later, and has the wrong name on it...

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe.
Barbeques on fire by the chalets past the castle headland
I watched the gift shops glitter in the darkness off the Newborough gate
All these moments will be lost in time, like icecream on the beach
Time for tea.

How much is her time worth- it takes a few minutes to apply. That's got
to be worth at least 150.

Yes, either by using it to pay for purchases abroad, or to withdraw
money from an ATM abroad.

Yes, indeed, er. I don't really think that the simple task of opening a
bank account is what I'd call account's work. Anyway, you can do it.

Hmmm - following this thread with interest.

Hopefully towards the end of June I'll have shedloads of sterling -
need to convert most of it to Euros to move abroad.

Any ideas as to the cheapest way of doing this, anyone?

Thanks in advance,
