Anyone have experience renting from Hertz at McCarran with a Saturday
afternoon pickup? Without an express membership how long of a wait can I
expect?

I'll be getting into Vegas about noon on a Saturday in Mid October. I'll be
renting a car from Sat until Tuesday at noon. I have two reservation now
both for midsize cars. There is no penalty to cancel one or both them.

The first is from Dollar where I have Dollar Express and it is currently
$100 (all inclusive).
The second reservation is through Hertz with a special AAA rate of $80 (all
inclusive).

I always in the past have rented from Dollar as I have Dollar Express and
get my car pretty quickly by bypassing the normal pickup area and by heading
directly downstairs to the garage kiosk to get my car. Never more than one
or two person wait in all the times I've used it.

I've seen some brutal lines upstairs at the car rental counters, and one of
my pet peeves is waiting in line.

On the other hand, with this special deal available from AAA through Hertz ,
the price would only be $80 about $20 less than Dollar (usually Hertz is a
lot more than Dollar).

My question is how bad might the lines be upstairs at the Hertz counter to
pick up my car on a Saturday at noon in October (without any special Hertz
Express or whatever Hertz calls their similar membership club)?

Would you risk the possible wait to save the $20 or should I go with the
tried and true, Dollar Express reservation for $20 more?

I'll have to make a decision one way or another soon and I don't think the
rates for Dollar will fall any further than $100 as they are already up to
$111 although I have my Dollar reservation locked in at $100.

I'm a Dollar Express renter for years and love the process. Can't you sign
up for the Hertz program and bypass the counter, or do they charge a fee to
be a member?

They charge $50 for Hertz #1 Gold. I would not pay for that unless I
rent from them all the time. I find Hertz most of the time to be more
money than others, unless I can get a rental with them through Hotwire
or Priceline. In any event I would stand in line to save $20.

I would be interested to know what the "daily rate" was from both Dollar
and Hertz, before the taxes and fees.

I recenlty checked rates for a weekly rental, dollar was $169 per week
and National was $189 per week. But after all the fees were added for
the 3 week rental, Dollar came out to $804.00 and National came out to
$746.00.

Dollar seems to add on some very inventive fees such as the "help us pay
our rent" fee and the "help us pay our employees" fee.
