From: Walt Bilofsky on 28 May 2010 01:12 Lonely Planet's Nepal guide, dated Sept. 2009, says that since the transition from monarchy to an elected Communist government, the mountains are safe for trekkers and tourism is booming. The Dangers and Annoyances section on theft mentions only petty theft from hotel rooms or unattended backpacks. The State Department web site, however, warns that "Crime in the Kathmandu Valley and in the major cities of Nepal continues and includes violent crime, robberies by armed gangs and the harassment of female travelers. Police resources to combat such crime are limited. Theft and muggings occasionally occur in popular tourist and trekking areas such as Chitwan, Pokhara and the Annapurna region and the Thamel area of Kathmandu." So - are they both correct? How safe is Nepal now, particularly in Khatmandu and the Khatmandu Valley?
