My mother is almost 86, and has a "permanent silver card" which
Trenitalia offered many many years ago in addition to yearly ones (I
guess she got it when she was 60 or thereabout, or the first year it was
offered ... can't remember the price, possibly 10000 lire).

Sometimes, when there are two conductors on the train, an old and a
young one, the old one asks her to show the card with some form of awe.

The card used to give a 30% discount on the standard fare. It is still
valid, but most long distance trains have now global fares, so the
discount is much smaller. And she has unlimited travel on regional
trains in the region she lives for 10 euro per year (disabled pass).

Actually 20000 lire of 1988, which should make 20.30 euro taking account
of inflation.
