These costs [hardware, software, baby-sitter] are almost nothing
compared to what the satellite time for the connection costs. If the
ship is going to remain connected "24/7" they need dedicated bandwidth
on a bird, and it has to be on a bird that covers the area they are
operating in. Satellite time is not cheap at any time, and for wide
area coverage it is even more expensive than one with just the Gulf of
Mexico.
Been there, done it, got several T-shirts.

unless you have a sick family member why do you need to stay in touch with
your family? can't they live without you?

Perhaps they can't. Maybe the parents have gone off on a cruise and
left their children with their parents.

Anyway if someone wants to stay in touch with family, what's it to
you? Why do you care? Is it jealousy that someone HAS family to stay
in touch with? Or guilt that you haven't phoned your mother recently?

If Princess is a little more expensive than the other lines, then
maybe one would take a cheaper cruise and pay for the internet rather
than take a more expensive cruise and pay for the internet.

Does that mean you only stay in touch with family if they are sick? I
don't think so....

Of course they can live without us, but you must not have a very close knit
family to say this...Just being able to know that everything and everyone at
home is fine makes a cruise more enjoyable and relaxed.
