Sharon Angle allowed one small quote to define her position on social
security and it caused her trouble. She never had a chance to fully
explain what she meant by phasing out social security.
Back in the early 70's a senator called for the same thing. He proposed a
40-50 year phaseout of social security with everyone converting over to a
private retirement plan. Allowing 40-50 years for the phaseout would do no
harm to anyone collecting social security and people retiring with a
private retirement plan would have more money than what they would receive
under social security. Some committee in the senate actually discussed
this phaseout, but it got dumped and never went anyplace. Why??
For one reason...it would have resulted in the termination of over 1000
social security jobs during the phaseout.
Don't believe me? It actually happened and I liked the plan myself.
