I've done it both ways, but more recently we book ahead. The only
problem with that is that you have less flexibility, though generally
you can change the bookings I suppose...

The main reason for us booking ahead is the ease of doing so now with
the internet. We also try not to travel in peak times, and that makes a
big difference. We did travel in Solvenia and Croatia during August a
few years ago though, and just turned up at the tourist information
(private companies) that were usually adjacent to bus and train
stations. We were always happy with their service.

That's not quite the same thing is it.

If you have paid to be "recommended" then you are treated equally regardless
of how "nice" they think a place is.

Stromboli is going to be one of the worst places to take a chance - you were
very lucky

My trip is 'planned' before I go and I have a list of possible places to
stay from the Rough Guide. We travel around the countries we go to and
do not commit ourselves to lengths of stay in advance at particular places.
If an area is good we may stay longer than we planned if it is not we
can quickly move on. The weather is also a factor when you get there.
In Turkey where there was flooding in two areas we quickly moved on.
Continuous rain in the Trondheim area of Norway made us quickly move south.
When in Vermont we phoned ahead to check on weather conditions for whale
watching trips from Rockport MA. They had rough seas so were not going
out.We used our Amtrak passes and took the train down to Philadelphia
for a few days.

The Eastbourne Tourist Office dropped a really bad hotel from their web
site.
The one we stayed at in Canterbury last week deserves the same fate:-)
