Day 3

I was up again at 2, and after some shopping, I decided to check out Corn
Creek for sunrise, North of the city near the Mount Charleston roads which
Steve had posted about a few weeks back. The only road leading to it I
could find was pretty rough though and I didn't want to risk driving it in
the dark with my new rental. So I just drove around the desert for a bit
which I seem to enjoy a little too much, even if there isnt anything
special to see.

Breakfast was at Mr Lucky's, where I spent another $10 restaurant.com
coupon. The food (ahi poke and a tuna melt with good fries) were actually
very good, but once again, appetizer and entree arrived at the same time.
When the waitress asked if I needed any change after having tacked on a
18% gratuity, I asked her rather pointedly whether she thought that her
service had been better than 18%. My main concern with that place is price
both dishes would have been greatly appreciated for half their price.
This way, just grade B-.

I really like listening to Five Hundy by Midnight
(http://www.fivehundybymidnight.com/fhbm/), a Vegas podcast. Tim and
Michelle also do a podcast about all kinds of stuff, but mostly music,
called Dyslexic Heart. I had never heard that song before, but here it was
being played in Vegas, at the Hard Rock. Nice coincidence.

I did some more outlet mall shopping, noticing some higher prices than
last year that seemed hard to understand. A shopgirl at Hilfiger valiantly
tried to explain away the higher prices by the recession, but finally gave
in: I know, youre right, but thats what Im supposed to say. Somehow
sweet.

I always print out the coupons readily available on the net to get the
coveted coupon book of the outlet malls (which they otherwise charge a few
bucks for). These offer varying discounts, but they always save me about
$50 per trip. Each time, they ask me where Im from, and each time , I
chose another country this time I was from Sweden. My main beef with the
Southern Outlet Mall is the parking leaving the car in the baking sun
turns everything liquid inside near boiling. My gps cable actually split
open from the heat.

I parked the car at Bill's which actually seemed closer to the Augustus
Tower than parking at Caesars' (its a loooong walk from self parking to
Augustus Tower, but at least you didint have to actually walk outside)
and had the added advantage of being able to order two 99 cent margaritas
at Bills which were surprisingly potent. I ambled around the pool at
Caesars for a bit and took some pictures (Snackus Maximus!), but it was
way too hot to stay there. The clientele was mixed plenty of hot young
people, but also the middle-aged monied set and even a few seniors. Im
not really fond of Caesars pool its huge but still somewhat boring,
not as over the top as it needs to be in my opinion.

Happy hour at Caesars' the Palm probably is the best food deal the city
has to offer right now. Located near the entrance of the Forum Shops next
to the casino, you can partake in hearty portions of really good food for
$3.50 an order, from 4.30 to 6.30 and again onwards from 9.30
(http://www.thepalm.com/promodetail.cfm?promo_id=127 ).

Walt was coming along to make sure I'd behave, and we were both hungry,
but couldn't finish more than two orders each. Given that the atmosphere
and the service is a lot nicer than at Ellis Island and there's more
choice too, this deal easily wins out. We had Kobe beef sliders, prime
cheesesteak and filet mignon sliders (each 3 for $3.50) and were both very
happy with the results. We paid $15 each with beverage and a generous tip.
Id loved to try out more of the menu, but was too full for that. There
isnt a need to purchase a drink, and my lemonade was reasonably priced.
Grade: A.

To walk off a few calories, I made my way down the Strip all the way to
Wynn. Walt went to stake out possible karaoke joints to gain every
possible advantage for his bid at Best Overall Karaoke Singer at the
Lost Weekend competation. No, Im not bitter.

Still, I stopped at Mirages Stack for a $3 happy hour vodka cocktail
which was just ok. Another stop for wi-fi at the Apple store later, I
rested a bit in the middle of Wynn's casino, just where the main casino
aisles converge, happily people watching, for which this is a fantastic
spot. So many attractive people passing through. Also, quite a few
douchebags. I walked through Palazzo and, passing by Table 10, remembered
my lunch with Burt Cohen very fondly. An extended visit to that restaurant
remains on my to do list.

Theres hardly a better place on the Strip for photographs than in front
of the Venetian at dawn. My favorite shot from the whole trip can be found
under the link at the end of this installment

Making my way back, I had two more 99 cent strawberry margaritas at Bill's
and called it a night.

We have birded Corn Creek numerous times. It is a little oasis that
is a magnet for the birds.

Not to be confused with a chick magnet.
