Carole, Why would we have bought postcards, mail-order? We currently have over 2,000 pictures of last years trip, and almost that many from the Germany trip. The men showed us a document that they had obtained from one of the genealogy companies. It was about ten pages of Latin that was used in the German church records. They showed us how a lot of the records had the same pattern of phrases too. Cathy

My youngest sister was trying to trace a branch in Germany via mail(some years ago). She had a secret weapon, though: I translated her letters and the replies she got. For doing live research I would think you'd need fluency in the written form of the language at least, or a companion who did. And have you looked at German handwriting a few generations back?
