There are already long haul flights from Newcastle.

I took one a couple of years ago.

Emirates to Dubai.

They'd need a market.

In my experience the bulk of people flying to Dubai from Newcastle were
locals; either people heading for the Middle East to work or British
South Asians heading to India or Pakistan for a holiday with the family.

Well yes, that's what I said.

Well, that's one...

I fit into neither of the categories mentioned either, but the bulk of
people on the flights I took seemed to.

Leeds, Manchester, get in a car and take an hour and a half drive,
get on a train for an hour's journey.

Security checks and long lead check-in times have killed a lot of UK
domestic flights. Nobody wants to go through airport security or spend
an hour in a departure lounge. They might as well spend the time on a
train which is more comfortable, has no security issues, serves better
food and drink, has a free wireless connection and you can use your phone.
