IMHO, it is good to have redundancy (back up) on a lot of things.
Especially the things you enjoy, like newsgroups. Google groups is
one of the various ways (as*A said, proboly the best) you can have
access to some not all of the newsgroups. There are over 65000
newsgroups and G does not carry them all, as I understand it. There
is some adult content. I just ignore it since it is the wild wild
west in these unmoderated arenas. Just don't read what you don't
want to read, as you do here.

I use several as I like to read what is said in different areas of
the world, in several languages. If you use google it can get very
complicated when you have to configure languages, have youyr posts NOT
shown after x days, yada yada yada, . Try one of the servers /
services noted above and see if it better than paying. It is far less
complicated.
