It was somewhat busy when I was there. Between the White Horse and the Tavern on the Wharf there were a couple of other eating and drink places that looked busy. Besides the Veendam there were two ships docked at Kings Wharf. Enchantment of the Seas and NCL Spirit. Plus since it was middle June I expect that there were more people at hotels on the island than when you went in early May which is off season. I was told that a number of the stores in St. George only open on the days when cruise ships are docked on the island. And there are some empty stores. The bookshop is closed for example. They have been affected by the lack of cruise ships that actually dock. We were supposed to tender but because of the weather the Veendam docked in Hamilton instead. Great for the passengers, not good for St. George. Docking in Hamilton the whole almost four days was the best Bermuda itinerary I have been on. Because of skipping St. George they gave us a free one day transportation pass with the idea that we would use it to go to St. George on any of the days. I was one who did use it for that purpose. However the pass could be used to go anywhere and while I think most on the Veendam went to St. George at some point during the week, some did not use it to go to St. George. I heard that because of the economic effect of no ships docking at St. George that support for widening the town cut for larger ships to go through it and dock in the town has increased. -- Charles

Obviously that side of the island has been in trouble some time, as evident by the closing of the hotel on the hill well over 10-15 years ago. --Tom

What I heard which I can't verify......it could just be sour grapes, is that politics is involved. The St. George Parrish has not been an area that supports the political party that has been in power and runs the government so St. George gets less attention. -- Charles
