You didn't say what cruise lines you are going on. RCI does a very
nice buffet with local yokel music on their island. Unless they have
cleaned up the charity-seekers, expect to be bombarded with requests
for handouts. It is a poor country.

Kohunlich is more impressive and you can climb around but it is a
longer ride.

Tulum has always been crowded and your ability to climb the ruins is
limited. We always rented a car it's a good island to do that as all
roads go around the island, no getting lost :)

We were in Labradee in Feb and there were no requests for handouts.
If you went to the Straw Market the vendors were aggressive, but that is
to be expected.

I would do a ships excursion to Tulum, not go on your own. If you are on
a ships excursion and get back late, the ship will wait for you. If you
rent a car and have car trouble, the ship will not wait for you. Some
ports it pays to go on your own, but this is not one of them.

Well said Sue, could not have phrased it better myself. The practical
aspects of a ship sponsored shore excursion sometimes come into play more
than just trying to save some money by going private. Standing on the shore
watching the ship sail off into the sunset is not a chance I would take - or
even recommend. All in all, a very good suggestion. Likewise, as questioned
by another, since Labadee is a private island owned by Royal Caribbean
International, that pretty much narrows down to what cruise line we're
talking about here.
