Because people become emotional when they disagree, and it is a blow
to their ego to admit that their opinions are no more valid than
anyone else's, so they resort to personal attacks in an attempt to
discredit their interlocutors in the eyes of others.

There really isn't much purpose to insults beyond that, especially
when directed to someone, such as myself, who is refractory to insult.

rules?

here?
