From: erilar on 19 Jun 2010 12:19 OK, so I plan further ahead than the normal Merkin 8-) Next May I'm going to take a tour in the Orkneys. To get to Aberdeen and thence to Kirkwall without changing airports in London involves flying via Copenhagen. This is fine and I like Denmark, so I was thinking about pausing there for a day or two. But the ticketing was a lot more involved than just getting to Aberdeen a couple days early, so I began to wonder. . . Maybe I could hunt castles in Scotland? This would have to be some kind of tour because I couldn't drive a rented car on the "wrong" side of the road to save my life. Suggestions for something beginning and ending in Aberdeen April 28,29,30? NOT a "whiskey tour". -- Erilar, biblioholic medievalist http://www.mosaictelecom.com/~erilarlo

The only thing initially is to try not to get into an emergency situation since your instinctive reactions could be wrong. -- James Silverton Potomac, Maryland Email, with obvious alterations: not.jim.silverton.at.verizon.not

You'll be unlikely to find a like minded group to share in April even though it is a school holiday http://www.duncans-flexitours.co.uk/example-day-tours.html Are you intrepid enough to do this by Public Transport. For example there's a service every 20 minutes to Crathes with buses from there to Balmoral every 2 hours. I'm quite happy to help with schedules if you can indicate which castles are of most interest. I think that this is a full list, though many will be inaccessible by bus tim

NOT a "whiskey tour". There are castles dotted all over Scotland, but for my money the most interesting of them all is Stirling. Easy enough to get to by train. You'd do better to travel independently by public transport, you can see quite enough to fill two or three days that way. Here is a discussion about castles (mainly in Scotland) that have tunes named after them. Follow the links in this and you can have a choice of music for just about any castle you might think of visiting. http://www.nigelgatherer.com/forum/showthread.php?tid=402 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- e m a i l : j a c k @ c a m p i n . m e . u k Jack Campin, 11 Third Street, Newtongrange, Midlothian EH22 4PU, Scotland mobile 07800 739 557 <http://www.campin.me.uk> Twitter: JackCampin
