We went through all of these questions before our first Disney cruise,
too, though it was only two of us and not four.

We ended up doing a 7-night western Caribbean cruise, and I'm really
glad we went for the longer cruise and not a three- or four-night
cruise. As it was it went really fast! If you have to take a shorter
cruise I would say go for the four-night - even then I think you'll feel
like you barely had a chance to be on board before the cruise was over!

For the route - it really depends on what you're interested in and want
to see. I enjoyed the ports on our western cruise more than I
think I would have enjoyed the Bahamas ports that are on the eastern
Caribbean itinerary, but I'd still like to do an eastern Caribbean
cruise sometime in the future - maybe when the Fantasy comes on-line.
I think a lot of people who have cruised before don't bother to
get off at Nassau any more. And really, there is SO much to do on
board the ship that spending a "port day" on board would actually
be a lot of fun.

We were VERY happy with our Category 9 outside stateroom on deck 2.
Though ours would only sleep 3 and not four. I didn't mind not having a
veranda - we had a veranda for our Med cruise back in May (got a free
upgrade), and it was nice, but I was just as happy in the one without.
Now, we did have a little bit larger stateroom, too, which would have
slept four instead of three. For a family I think you would appreciate
the extra room, though. Storing clothes for four people would be a
challenge - we had sufficient room for just two of us, but not a whole
lot of room left, so with four it would have had to be a lot more
creative!

I've only been on the Disney Magic, but I think both of the ships are
nice (and starting next year the Dream will be an option!), so it's not
like you're going to find that one ship is a luxury liner and the other
is a rusty old tub. :-) The amenities and services are equivalent - I
think the main difference between the Magic and the Wonder is that the
third restaurant is called Triton's rather than Lumiere's.

We got a lot of great information from the Passporter Disney Cruise
book. I found it to be very readable, informative, and pretty accurate
and up-to-date.

I did a whole series of blogs on our first Disney cruise:
The entire thread, including what lead up to our going, is here:
http://land.allears.net/blogs/lauragilbreath/disney_cruise_line/

Part 1 of the cruise itself is here:
http://land.allears.net/blogs/lauragilbreath/2009/01/disney_cruisin_day_3_1.html
- we spent two days at WDW prior, so it says Day 3 because it's Day 3
of the trip but only day 1 of the cruise. A link to the next day's blog
is at the bottom of each blog entry and in the blue box on the right
side.

Hope that helps - we had a FABULOUS time on our cruise - so much so that
while on board (that was January 2009) we scheduled the Med cruise
that we took in May, and we are also going on the first Alaska cruise
next May! Would love to squeeze in a Mexican Riviera cruise, since
we don't have to travel far for that, but we have neither unlimited
money nor unlimited vacation time. Sigh. Actually my husband
really wanted to do a Disney Dream cruise next year - but same
problem. So we'll plan to do the Fantasy in 2012 instead.

My pleasure. I always try to be helpful.

(Those screendoors'll keep the skeeters out. They're bad this
year. Can you imagine mosquitoes in a submarine?)

Laura is completely on target here. Our first cruise was a 4-night on
DCL, and we had originally planned a 3-night. We did this because we
were not sure how Jan would handle it. She gets seasick looking at a
glass of water. We had to switch dates and that meant a 4-night
schedule. As it turned out, there was no seasickness and everyone
wanted it to last longer. Our next cruise was a 7-night on RCCL and
that was just perfect.

We did eastern on DCL and western on RCCL. By far, the western route
ports are much better. I don;t care anything for Nassau or Jamaica.
Cozumel, the VI's and Caymans are all nice.

Yes, we did this on RCCL at their "private beach" in Haiti. The ship
was quiet and it was very relaxing. Now, on DCL, don't skip Castaway
Cay! It's worth the cruise just to go there.

Unfortunately, when we switch from a 3-night cruise over spring break to
a 4-night cruise over Labor Day, the price went down drastically. It
was unfortunate because we were able to upgrade to a category 3
one-bedroom suite for the same price as our category 4/5 and it totally
spoiled us! Having a 30-foot wide veranda and a real bathroom and
bedroom was unbelievable. The people who recommend not wasting money on
the stateroom are the ones who stay in a broom closet int he bowels of
the ship. We spent time in our room every day enjoying the view and
still did everythign on board that we wanted to.

Yes, Passporter for DCL is highly recommended.

We heard about that view from the veranda....
