From: Jean O'Boyle on

In September, we'll be visiting the Greek Isle of Santorini. It is one of
our cruise ship stops and our second time there. Last time we took the tram
lift up and spent most of the day walking the city of Fira and having lunch
and drinks at a restaurant perched on the edge of the cliff with its
beautiful panoramic view . This time, schedule permitting, we would like to
include a visit to Oia.

I was wondering if any one had been there on this group and could tell me if
they had taxis from Fira to Oia and the distance between the two cities so
that we can see if we can fit it into our schedule. The ship will be docked
from 4 pm to 11 pm.

Thanks in advance,

Why absolutely rely on this group where old people dissert endlessly about
their intestinal problems in 1995 ???
Google helps, it takes 2 secs and plenty of answers to your question which
has already been asked countless times.
Even choosing the key words isn't difficult, just use normal speech.
....or is it just a way of entertaining the same old people ?
OK then waiting for martin's funny joke.

Of late, Oia has become a major tourist village. Visitors come to explore
its meandering lanes, take photographs and have a relaxing meal in its
restaurants. To avoid the crowds, one should visit it in the morning, before
the cruise ships disgorge their load of passengers. One day is not
sufficient at Oia, one should plan a vacation of a few days, to make the
trip worthwhile.

Oia can be reached from the central bus station in Thira. Alternatively take
a taxi from the port in Thira. It costs 20 euros per group. Be forewarned
that the road from Thira to Oia is extremely winding.

Oia - Fir
12 km. M = D : 300 m.

You will find the Santorini bus schedule at www.ktel-santorini.gr. All buses
travel via the bus station in Fira. The last bus from Fira to Oia is at 8.00
p.m. Buses meet all ferries at the port, but it is wise to jump off the
ferry promptly before the bus fills up, although this may not be such a
problem in winter. I would be surprised if the taxi fare from Fira to Oia
was as much as 25 euros, I would have thought around half that, but you may
be able to find someone else to share with. If you do this, do not give the
driver the impression that you are travelling separately, or you will be
charged separately for the full fare.

The port bus will take you into Fira for 2 euro then another bus will take
you to Oia for 1.4 euro.

Here's a link to the island bus schedule: http://www.ktel-santorini.gr

Yes, the taxi fare from the port to Oia is 25 euro.

It's about 7 miles between the two villages, not all flat. 2 hours or a
little longer sounds about right. I've seen people walking it but I think
that since you have so little time you'd want to be able to explore the
villages instead. There are, however, other "walks" you could take. From Oia
you can walk down the steps to the little fishing 'ports' of Amoudi and
Armeni, both just below the village. Or you can walk down the cement road
from Oia to Baxedes Beach, at least a mile's walk. Just walking through the
villages will be exercise because of all the up-and-down stair paths.

Mopeds are another option, but the road is a bit narrow and the auto drivers
slightly crazy. I don't recommend it for the novice or the faint of heart.

Unless you absolutely feel the need to get away from everyone, I agree with
Marko. Take a taxi or bus.

I just had a thought...you could take the bus to Oia but get off once the
village comes into view and walk the rest of the way. That would be a walk
of a mile or two from where you can first see it. Just ask the driver to
stop.

Runge, I did Google for information but had hoped that I would hear from
someone who had actually done this excursion.
I read that there were buses and taxis, but none of the sites provided the
information that I was really looking for...but you did.
Thank you for your very thorough post including the fares and time tables of
the buses.

I wish we could spend more time but we must follow the ship's schedule. We
are
also going to Corfu, Mykonos and Crete.

Anything like the Amalfi Coast?

The distance between Oia and Thira was what I really wanted to know,
thank you!

The taxi fare sounds reasonable... there will be three of us and
since my husband had a knee replacement that is what we probably will take.
Again, thank you very much for all the links and information.
