I've been to Zermatt twice. Two nights the first visit and we never saw the Matterhorn or any of the other mountains. We were clouded in. Second visit - just a day trip - and there wasn't a cloud in the sky - a brilliant mountain top to look at.

Weather can always be a problem in the Alps, thats why imho especially short vacation in that area should leave room for last moment adjustments. Basically, NW part of the Alps range gets most precipitation; SE more sunshine As already mentionned in an other posting: Mattertal (Zermatt valley) is well sheltered from main NW weather fronts by the Bernese Alps, W by several mountain ranges. "Bad weather" comes from S/SW - not frequent, and usually for a a few days only (when weather fronts reaching Matterhorn from SW move ESE, winds usually turn W, than NW) To my experience, Matterhorn is hidden by clouds, fog or snow seldom for more than 2-3 days in a row .... but on my last vacation week in Zermatt, we could see the Matterhorn only on 3 days: Saturday when arriving, Tuesday and again on Saturday when leaving ..... Thats why I like the link http://bergbahnen.zermatt.ch/d/web-cam/archiv/zermatt4.html - daily webcam pics for a year .... Have fun

Both are expensive so if the weather closes in its probably not worth it, if the weather its very good then it is awesome
