Well, that part I can offer an explanation for: they've decided to create
Disney-branded gashapon.* Lots and lots of collectible toys and figurines
are sold this way in Japan.

My SO has gotten various sets of airplane models this way from the local
hobby store. In a sign the American market is not completely open to this
sort of thing, though, the hobby store has taken to opening the boxes and
labeling them with what's inside, with a slight markup, of course.

Oh.. that's what it is. Makes more sense to me. I have a niece
who is whacko for anime and I can see the similarities. Still not for me.

They remind me of the large animal statues you see painted in various
artistic and/or amusing ways in mostly tourist towns. Example: Athens
Georgia has a series of bulldogs, the Smoky Mountains has bears, Tybee
Island (Savannah) has turtles. The first ones I ever saw were
cows. You can then purchase small replicas of the statues in gift
shops.
Oh, please, tell me there aren't giant statues like these small
creatures spread around WDW. That would be the worst mistake since
the godawful cemetery next to Spaceship Earth.
