LOL! That's the truth! Just the other day, teaching Katie, to drive, I
decided to use the NAV system because I was tired of having to tell her
where to turn. Right off the bat, it tried to send her down a dead-end
dirt road. Ironically, it was the only dead-end dirt road within a
20-mile radius, but the NAV system found it. Of course I told her to
ignore the instructions and keep going straight so it could recalculate.

Are you sure it was a dead end road? I've come across places that
have put up "dead end" and "no outlet" signs, just to keep people
off their road.

And here's an article I came across while I was investigating the
Escalante - Grand Staircase National Monument in 2008. Interestingly
enough, it's from a Pennsylvania newspaper.

It's an article on how to stupidly depend on a GPS...

No, it's definitely a dead-end road. In fact, it's not really a road,
but a driveway for a few old houses that have refued to sell out to the
land developers who build subdivisions of McMansions all around them.

OK, I'm glad these people survived, and I know this is going to sound
harsh, but technology will never be a solution for stupidity!

Really, if you're going to go into a wilderness area, and you don't
check with the rangers first on what is and is not passable, you're
pretty much in line for a Darwin Award. (And by wilderness, I mean
a non-populated area. Not a designated wilderness area. You can't
drive into those at all.) Even if the road you're on is on a map.

Especially in Utah. Especially in a cheap sub-compact car. (But I'm
gonna rent a 4x4 out there one year...)
