From: Gadget World on 5 Jun 2010 22:46 I was recently on a cruise where a man broke a bone in his leg in St Thomas. When the ship's doctor offered to send him to the hospital in St Thomas, he refused and said he wanted to go to a hospital in the US and finally was helicoptered to San Juan. He didn't believe that the US Virgin Islands are called that as they are US territories, just like Puerto Rico. He would have been far better off, if he just stayed on the ship for the remainder of the cruise with his wife, but he was in a hurry to go to a hospital in the "USA", where he thought his HMO would cover his expenses. What a lot of time and money wasted over a lack of geography knowledge. Inspecor Gadget

If you are an AAA member can't you get the same travel insurance even if you don't have their auto insurance? And $125 a person does not sound like it is less expensive than travel insurance offered on line. -- Charles

Everyone does not pay the same for travel insurance.

Of course not. Pricing depends on the price of the cruise and the age of the insured. If it is a $10000 cruise and he is 90 years old $125 is a bargain. But assuming that price is for a seven day Caribbean cruise then it would be in the price range one would expect from any travel insurer. -- Charles |
