"large assault rifles"? Everything looks large to idiot reporters who can't
tell a pistol from a revolver. Unless someone can link to a photo of this,
I'd say what they saw were shotguns......the shotguns can shoot beanbags and
other non-lethal projectiles. Otherwise, they were simply AR-15s, which are
what our troops use. They shoot .223 caliber, and are not any big deal. No
more than any other rifle. In a situation such as a near riot, I'll take
all the intimidation factor I can get! ;)

They were ar-15s, OPD wanted to do a full show and be ready in case
anyone
wanted trouble.

At least some authorities are facing reality:

"Operation All Hands on Deck will target the high-crime pockets in
downtown Orlando, the Parramore, Rosemont, Mercy Drive and Kirkman
Road and International Drive corridors.

"We are in a three-year epidemic. We've got to solve it, and it's
going to start at the local level," Orlando Police Chief Mike McCoy
said."

Not saying I am unhappy with a show of force by the police, I was just wondering how an assault rifle
that will not be used, is useful in crowd control. I've never been shot by a .223 cal, but I'm
relieved to hear they are "not any big deal". If that is so they why would troops use them?

A drunken crowd who are too off their heads to know when to stop vs a bunch of outnumbered, perhaps
scared, cops with guns is a recipe for a tragedy. Anyone remember Kent State? Go look it up on
Wikipedia. Batons and body armour would be better.

When Church Street booming it was a much better place. Now all you
see are sleazy night clubs and tattoo parlors. I have a family and I
don't take chances with them. You're taking chances when you go
downtown during the day or night. Also Universal Studios opened City
Walk. My kids love it. And it's safe.

Yep, AR-15 is the civilian version of the M-16, nice weapon just don't get
it dirty. Plus I would much rather read that article than one titled "Riot
breaks out in downtown Orlando". Keep in mind there is also no such thing
as a "small assault rifle" too.

I also agree that reporters are mostly idiots (dated one and met her
coworkers at MANY parties) they love to dream up ways to sensationalize a
situation.
