The problem may be that some people don't want to head to the airport
directly after a day in the parks; they may want to take a shower or
freshen up before heading home. Personally, this doesn't bother me
much, but my wife definitely falls into that category. She won't even
go to the parks the morning that we leave, even if she has time to
freshen up before departure. Heck, when we go to the beach, we can stay
in our condo as late in the day as we want, and she still won't "do"
anything that day.

Back to the OP, I have had the same disappointing results as you.
Disney simply does not accommodate late check-outs. Getting 1PM is
actually pretty darned good - IME, I've been told no, or begrudgingly
been given until noon. I'd love it if they would allow guests to pay
half a night's rate for a 4PM checkout. In practice, they probably
could do it for no charge based on room schedules, but I'd still be
willing to pay the extra fees to cover housekeepers working late, etc.

I'm with Gloria and Paul on this too. You have a whole day. Don't
waste it! When planning, leave things to do on that day
specifically. DH usually wants to go commando that particular day and
we hit every park on the last day!

Evidently "go commando" has a whole different meaning in my house...

What's the big deal? You check out late, have bell services hold your
bags, and go enjoy the parks.
From: Mike Tuchman on
But right now all of your calls have been to a call center. Once you
get checked in, asked to speak to a Guest Services Manager at your
resort. You may be very surprised of what can be done for you. A lot
will depend on the Resort, room type/location, and what reservations
they actually have.
