I work out of my suitcase for short trips. For longer ones, I will unpack.

I am an economist (well, at least I have a degree in economics) and it
does not appear to have been too "counter-productive" since rooms are
filled. What they have done is to make it appear that they have lowered
prices. This has been done by charging extra for non-expiring and
hopper passes, and by jacking up the cash price for food then selling
the "meal plans". On top of that, they have reduced the level of
service. All in all, a WDW vacation today is more expensive than it was
in years past, but it doesn't seem that way because of the manipulations
of the numbers.

Yes, there were fewer resorts back then and this was a very busy time
for WDW. I recall around that time trying to get a reservation over six
months in advance and there was nothing available. A travel agent
friend of mine did finally get us something, but not for all the days we
wanted.

Also, the "value" is based on comparing its cost to the cash price of
food. People forget that the cash price is so ridiculously inflated
that the meal plan seems like a good value. It's kind of like saying
you got a good deal on that $500 dress because it was 50% off and you
paid only $250, but then not realizing that you can get the same thing
down the road for $100.

If I stay in the same place for more than one night, I unpack. At
least my hanging clothes. I may leave socks and under-clothing in the
suitcase unless it's a three night stay.
