My map shows it at just under 700 miles, which is an average of about 63mph, and since the speed limit on the interstate is usually 70mph, thats not really bad. > Yer just a leadfoot. But I think we've already established that... > :-) Yes, I am, but honestly, when I drive long distance, I usually don't go as fast. I generally stay at or just under 80mph on 70mph open Interstate highways. And I always observe speed limits on secondary and residential streets. I usually observe lower speed limits in constructions zones, but I will "keep up with traffic" depending on the situation. > BTW, have you ever gone the route South (US-231) through Dothan to > I-10? I'd rather > not have to drive all the way to New Orleans to pick up I-55...) We do usually go that way simply because I *HATE* I-20 to Atlanta. It's not too bad. The worst parts are Montgomery. Getting from I-65 to US-231 is bad unless you're ddoing it very early in the morning or very late at night. There used to be a great shortcut, taking I-85 toward Atlanta, then cutting off at the AU-M exit, and angling down to US-231, but that is now the "up and coming" suburb in Montgomery so it's not much better. On US-231, your two biggest slow downs are Troy and Dothan - the latter being the worst. I usually go straight down 231 through town instead of taking the bypass. There are a few small-town speed traps, but Cottondale, just north of I-10 is the worst. If you even look like you want to exceed the ridiculously low posted limit, they will stop you. An alternative, which I have not tried, is US-82. You pick this up east of Montgomery on I-85. It runs about 200 mile through rural AL and GA, coming out onto I-75 at Tifton, GA. The largest town it goes through is Albany, GA,m which doesn't look too bad (not as big and congested as Dothan), but there are two or three other small town where the road goes right through the middle, with turns around a town square and such. I've also heard of some people taking US-280 out of Birmingham. This hooks up with US-82 in Georgia. I know 280 is decent 4-lane all the way to Columbus, GA, but there are some congested towns - the worst is south of Birmingham which is a parking lot anywhere around rush hour. > I assume you take US-331 to Destin... It depends. I never take 331 out of Montgomery. I take I-65 to Georgianna and then cut off there through Andelusia. Then, I either take highway 84 to Opp, AL, then cut down 331, or 55 all the way to the FL state line and then 331. It all depends on my gut feeling about traffic. Since the oil spill, more traffic tends to be going further east to Panama City, so I stick to 55. We used to take 137 out of Andelusia, then go through Crestview, FL and Niceville, coming across the Mid-Bay Bridge onto 98 in Destin. I don't like that route because Crestview and Niceville are always very busy, and then once we get across the Mid Bay Bridge, we have to go about 6 miles east to the condo at Sandestin and that stretch of 98 is very busy with lots of shopping centers and traffic lights. I like coming out onto 98 at 331. It's a little further east of Sandestin than the Mid-Bay Bridge is west, but there are very few intersections and much less traffic. Really, no matter how we slice it, it's about 2500 miles from our house and takes just over 4 hours. -- - RODNEY Next WDW Vacation? Who knows! Yeah, Keane's phrasing can be a bit tricky at times. It's sort of like playing Jeopardy! where all the answers must be in the form of a question. -- - RODNEY Next WDW Vacation? Who knows! The new Vietnam area is down by Clark and Argyle in Chicago, but I've never eaten there. After the area got established, all the stray dogs in the city disappeared... (No, no, only kidding...) The Korean area is up on Lawrence, stretching from Western all the way to I-94. You know the comment I made about the Vietnam area? Well, the cats started to go too... The new Indian area is right by me on Devon, from about Ridge to California. I'd really like to try a couple of places, I just have to get the courage to try it. (And remember to bring my imodium.) Chinatown has gone waaaaaaay downhill. All my favorite restaurants are now dim sum or something equally as distasteful. I might go down there to shop for something, but not for the food any longer. The one Cantonese restaurant I still frequent is only okay. I'm not sure it's a place you want to go out of your way for, but at least it's still traditional, Cantonese food. >Any particular recommendations in Chicago that would fit with that? If you're out by the airport (O'Hare), you could go to the place I get my sushi and sashimi, as well as anything else I need Japanese. I mostly frequent the grocery store, but they have a food court, (I've only eaten there once or twice, it's okay); their sushi is very good, and the sashimi is fresh; there's a book store, a liquor store, travel agency, etc, all under one roof. It's sorta like being in the Japan Pavilion, without the tourist restaurants. It's where I get my nori, rice crackers, etc, at a fraction of the price of Mitsukoshi in Epcot... :-) Overview: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mitsuwa_Marketplace The Chicago store: http://www.mitsuwa.com/tenpo/cica/eindex.html >BTW: My dining recommendation re: Northern Indiana -- don't...
